“My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The similitude of one who remembers his Rabb and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6407)
Pondering over this striking hadith, we are explicitly told the importance of this virtuous act of worship.
Among the many benefits of Dhikr, include:
- It is cherished by Allah SWT:
- “Remember me, and I will remember you” (Quran 2:152);
- Relieves the mind and heart from anxiety and sadness;
- “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” (Quran 13:28);
- Expels the devil, weakens his plots and removes his whisperings from the heart of a Muslim;
- Protects one’s tongue from indulging in sinful acts;
- It cleanses the heart of it’s rust:
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “There is a polish for everything that takes away rust, and the polish for the heart is the remembrance of Allah SWT” (Bukhari);
- It fills the heart with love of Allah SWT. Those who are remembered continuously are those who are much loved;
- A means for attaining reward and barakat (blessings) in this world and the hereafter;
The remembrance of Allah SWT, gains us peace and contentment in the dunya; and immeasurable rewards in the aakirah. Therefore, without Dhikr, we would surely be at a great loss.
