Ayah As-Sakinah: The Verses That Bring Your Heart to Rest

Ayah As-Sakinah - Verses of Tranquility in the Dhikr App

There are moments in life when the world feels too loud. When anxiety creeps in uninvited. When your chest tightens and your mind won’t stop racing. In those moments, Allah didn’t leave you without a remedy. He gave you Ayat As-Sakinah — the Verses of Tranquility.

And now, they’re in the Dhikr app. Ready whenever you need them. 🤲

What Is Sakinah?

Sakinah (سكينة) is the divine tranquility that Allah sends down upon the hearts of the believers. It’s not just calm — it’s a spiritual stillness that settles over you like a warm blanket on a cold night. It’s peace that doesn’t come from your circumstances changing. It comes from your heart changing.

The word appears six times in the Qur’an, each time describing a moment where Allah intervened to bring peace to hearts that were tested:

“It is He who sent down tranquility (sakinah) into the hearts of the believers, that they may increase in faith along with their existing faith.”
— Surah Al-Fath, 48:4

The Story Behind These Verses

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله), one of the greatest scholars of Islam, documented something deeply personal. He described how Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah would recite specific verses from the Qur’an when his heart felt constricted — when tests and tribulations pressed down on him.

These weren’t random selections. They were the six verses where Allah specifically mentions sending down Sakinah. Ibn Taymiyyah called them the Ayat As-Sakinah — and he found that reciting them brought an immediate, tangible sense of peace.

Ibn al-Qayyim writes in Madarij al-Salikin:

“I heard Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah — may Allah sanctify his soul — say: ‘When something would trouble me, I would recite these verses and find that tranquility would descend upon my heart.'”

If it worked for one of the most tested scholars in Islamic history, imagine what it can do for you. 🕊️

The Six Verses of Sakinah

Quran and prayer beads - Ayat As-Sakinah

Each verse captures a different moment where Allah sent Sakinah to His servants:

1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:248)

The Ark of the Covenant returned to Bani Isra’il, carrying “sakinah from your Lord” — a sign of divine kingship and peace for a nation in turmoil.

2. Surah At-Tawbah (9:26)

After the Battle of Hunayn, when the believers were shaken, “Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers.”

3. Surah At-Tawbah (9:40)

In the cave during the Hijrah, with enemies at the door, the Prophet ﷺ told Abu Bakr: “Do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us.” And Allah sent down His sakinah.

4. Surah Al-Fath (48:4)

“He it is who sent down sakinah into the hearts of the believers that they may increase in faith.” — Faith upon faith. Peace upon peace.

5. Surah Al-Fath (48:18)

Under the tree at Hudaybiyyah, when the Companions pledged allegiance, “Allah knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down sakinah upon them.”

6. Surah Al-Fath (48:26)

When the disbelievers were filled with arrogant fury, “Allah sent down His sakinah upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and imposed on them the word of taqwa.”

When to Recite Them

There’s no rigid rule — these verses are your refuge whenever you need them. But here are the moments they hit hardest:

🌊 When anxiety overwhelms you — before a difficult meeting, an exam, a conversation you’ve been dreading
💔 When grief sits heavy on your chest — loss, disappointment, heartbreak
🌙 During the quiet of the night — in your qiyam, in your sujood, when it’s just you and Allah
😤 When anger rises — before you say something you can’t take back
🤲 Before making a big decision — when you need clarity and calm

Now Available in Dhikr — Beautifully Recited

We’ve added Ayah As-Sakinah as a new Fikr in the Dhikr app, under the Tranquility category. Beautifully recited by Qari Ahmad Al-Nafees — one of the most soothing voices in Qur’anic recitation.

Open the app. Go to Fikrs → Tranquility → Ayah As-Sakinah. Put your headphones in. Close your eyes. And let the words of Allah wash over your heart. 🎧

This isn’t background noise. This is medicine for the soul.

The Science Backs It Up

Modern research consistently shows that listening to Qur’anic recitation reduces anxiety and cortisol levels. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Religion and Health found that participants who listened to Qur’an recitation experienced significantly lower anxiety scores compared to control groups.

The rhythmic, melodic nature of tajweed — the elongated vowels, the pauses, the resonant tones — activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Your heart rate slows. Your breathing deepens. Your muscles relax.

But here’s what the studies can’t measure: the spiritual dimension. The connection between a servant and their Creator. The moment when the words enter your ears and something shifts inside your chest. That’s sakinah. And no lab can replicate it. ✨

A Ramadan Practice

This Ramadan, try something simple. Every night, after taraweeh or before you sleep:

  1. Open Dhikr → Fikrs → Tranquility
  2. Play Ayah As-Sakinah
  3. Close your eyes and listen with your heart, not just your ears
  4. Make du’a afterwards — your heart will be soft and open

Do this for 30 days. Watch what happens to your anxiety. To your sleep. To your relationship with the Qur’an. To your entire state of being.

Tranquility isn’t something you chase. It’s something Allah sends down. 🕊️
